NIGER STATE SET TO RECEIVE COVID-19 VACCINES
Niger State government is always ahead of other state when ever it comes to the issue of health care service delivery. The commencement of two days training of Frontline health workers in the state in less than 48 hours that the first batch of COVID19 vaccine arrived in the country is a clear evidence among other activities to support this claim
Recall that the first batch of Oxford/AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, which is about 3,924,000 doses, arrived in Nigeria on Tuesday 2nd March 2021 at 11:10am and by Friday 5th March 2021, Niger State has already concluded her two days training on COVID19 vaccine.
According to Pharm. Jiya Daniel Tsado, the acting project manager SERRIC said the two days training was for the introduction of COVID-19 vaccine in the state.
The training was organized to train LGAs health team which comprises of Director primary health care, Local immunization officers, Routine immunization officers, monitoring and evaluation officers, Community engagement focal persons, health Educators, amongst others.
The training which was divided in six (6) clusters comprises:
1. Training on basic facts of COVID-19 on storage, distribution, logistics, administering, handling and other things sarounding COVID-19.
2. Training on how to sensitise the communities in order, to build their confidence to take COVID-19 vaccine when it eventually, arrived at the State.
The LGAs health workers that received the training were tasked to go back to their various LGAs to train the health care workers at the LGAs level and they will in turn, sensitise the community basically, by using the ward focal persons.
The program was organized to prepare the state, LGAs and Communities for the anticipated arrival of COVID19 vaccine for it to be accepted by the people in the state.
Finally, the strategy on how to go about administering the vaccine in the state was adopted. The strategy categorizes how the vaccine will be administered into three phases as follows:
Phase 1, the Frontline health workers, security agents at the borders and the people serving petrol at fuel stations based on the risk that they are exposed to. The people involved in this category constitute only one (1) percent population of the state.
Phase 2, vaccination process involves vaccination of elderly people from 50 years and above. And people with co-morbidities such as: hypertension, diabetes, lung disease, other heart disease, liver or renal disease, etc.
Phase 3, vaccination will cover the younger ones and the entire general public.
Phase 4, other eligible population as vaccine become available
The strategy for administration of COVID19 vaccine will ba at two points as follows:
1. Fixed post:- This will be at the facility level where people will go and access the vaccine at the designated facilities.
2. Temporary fixed post:- This is where a team will go to the community within the catchment area of the facility. They will stationed a camp and people will be called out to come and take the vaccine.
With the successful completion of the two days training of LGAs health workers, Niger State is fully prepared and set to receive COVID19 vaccine
